The Story of Ihor Kholodylo: Healing Through Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
Ihor Kholodylo, a military psychologist and medic, has walked a challenging path from trauma to recovery. In 2014, during an evacuation mission, his vehicle was hit by a Russian tank shell. This incident left Ihor with severe injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and significant speech difficulties. Traditional treatment methods failed to deliver the desired results until he turned to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP).
Under the guidance of Dr. Vladyslav Matrenytskyi, a pioneer in psychedelic psychotherapy in Ukraine, Ihor underwent several KAT sessions. During one session, he was able to revisit and process a painful moment when he tried to save a comrade who eventually passed away. The altered state induced by KAT allowed Ihor to confront this memory and find peace, realizing he had done everything possible. This breakthrough significantly improved his condition: his stutter diminished, and his PTSD symptoms subsided. After ten sessions, Ihor felt a return to normal life.
In 2024, Ihor became one of eight participants in the pilot Ketamine-Assisted Group Psychotherapy (KAP) Program, organized by Heal Ukraine Trauma (HUT). This program aims to equip Ukrainian psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists with the skills needed to conduct group KAP sessions for veterans. In July 2024, HUT launched its first comprehensive KAP training program, which provided participants with the necessary knowledge and preparation. By November 2024, program participants, including Ihor, transitioned to the supervision phase and began treating veterans through group KAP sessions.
Ihor Kholodylo's story is an example of how innovative treatment methods can restore life after the most severe traumas and inspire others to seek effective ways to overcome PTSD.
